Watts bootcamp thumbs Critique

Hello,
Please forgive the roughness of these since I was at an urgent care when I was doing them haha. I wanted to do both prompts, "A light in the darkness" and "A summoning." Now I am leaning more towards the "A light in the Darkness" for the onsite workshop. I played with some rough thumbs to get an idea of camera angles and what kind of mansion, mostly working out placement and composition. I took a go at a tighter rough, but I feel the figure and bottom stairwell are not quite in sync yet, so I will need to fix these with some better constructed stairs and a figure "self pose" shot. Hope to have a solid drawing ready to go for the workshop of this one.

A Summoning
I got as far as a quick digital thumbnail to show the scale of the beast and environment.

  1. Hi Jacob, Great start on these! I like seeing the thought process through your notes. Here are a few notes on what you've posted.

The Knight- This one has really nice strong compositional angles. It creates a lot of dynamic shapes. I really dig the environment but the figure needs some attention. Try playing with a few different poses. The thing that stands out most to me is that he and a lot of the angles are pushing to the left, driving the viewer off the page. Try some poses where the knight is facing the other direction. (Maybe he's walking down the stairs?) (Maybe he heard something that made him turn sharply around?) Keep in mind the proportions of the environment to the character as well. As it is, the banister is very short and each of the stairs are very deep compared to our character.

The Dragon - This one is not bad but I feel like there are too many circles within circles on this one. Too many parallel circles. I like the eel design of the dragon, but I'd encourage you to play with the dragon design further. I try and push specific animal designs into my creatures base on their environment. (An eel-type dragon would work well in a water enviro,... etc.) (Perhaps the dragon has fur or antler-like horns being in a forest environment)

This could be pushed with value and color, but the witch will need to stand out more. She is very small in the frame so you will need to use other contrasts to make her more central.

I'll look forward to meeting you at the workshop!

    Lucas
